At each monthly club meeting, SVAS holds a bowl show in which all members are invited to participate. Some months the bowl show is open to any fish; other months entry is restricted to fish of a certain size or to a particular type. Please see the home page for details on this month's bowl show. Points are awarded to the fish who have placed in the auction and a plaque is awarded for the winner of the most points for that year.
Entering the bowl show is easy: just bring your fish to the Bowl Show table. The organizer will ask your name and your fish's name (popular or scientific), and your fish is in the show. We do recommend that you bring water from the fish's home tank, since fish are always happier and safer in water they are used to. It is also best to arrive at 7:30pm to make sure everything is done by the meeting's start at 7:45pm.
After the bowl show judging (usually just before the start of the auction), the organizer will come by and ask you to pick up your fish. If you want to auction your fish off, just bag it up, and put it in the auction. If your fish has placed in the show, be sure the write that on the bag. That way the auctioneer can announce "2nd place in the bowl show" etc.
Bowl Show Rules:
- You must be a member in good standing to enter the SVAS bowl show.
- The SVAS will have a limited number of 10 inch "critter cages" available to house your fish. These tanks will be available to the first fish entered in the show. Or, you may bring your own container, which must have at least one flat side and be up to 2 gallons in size. (Larger fish can be put in larger tanks.)
- The SVAS will provide treated water from the restaurant's tap. You may bring your own water. This is especially encouraged if your fish have special water requirements.
- Unless the Bowl Show Chairman announces special rules in advance, the default entry is one fish per entry. If there are more than one fish in the bowl, the judge will make his own choice of the which fish to consider as the entry.
- At any meeting, the Bowl Show Chairman may announce special rules for the bowl show the following month. These special rules may include:
- Minimum or maximum length, applied to the "standard length" of the fish, meaning the length of the body of the fish, NOT including the tail.
- Fish schools, where the judge will edvaluate all the fish in each entry as a group.
- Fish will be judged by size and condition of the fish. Rare or exotic species will not get additional consideration.
- First place will get 3 points, second place gets 2 points, and third place gets 1 point towards the SVAS Annual Bowl Show Champion award.
- You may not enter the same fish 2 months in a row, or more than 3 times in one year.
- Do not bring rocks or caves. Floating plants are OK, but remember, if the judge can not properly observe your fish, the fish can not win.
- The Bowl Show organizer may take reasonable action to assure the health and well being of fish in the bowl show, such as asking an owner to change the water in a bowl during the meeting. Failure to honor these requests may lead to disqualification.
- Decision of the judge(s) is final. Do not talk to the judge during competition.
- The Silicon Valley Aquarium Society and the host restaurant are not responsible for any fish entered in the Bowl Show.
- Each member may enter up to two different species as separate entries in one month's bowl show.
